Northerly crosses the line to win the 2002 Caulfield Cup with 58kgs.

During the spring of 2002 Northerly won 5 races in succession. John backed him in all these wins but prior to the running of the Turnbull Stakes on October the 5th he also took a double at the odds of 50 to 1 that Northerly would win both the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate. When Northerly won the Caulfield Cup on the 19th of October 2002 it was a very exciting moment.

One week later he won the 2002 Cox Plate against one of the best fields ever assembled for the race.

And I get my double...

In March 2003, Northerly won his 2nd Australian Cup at Flemington by 4 lengths. On July 3rd he was named Australian Racehorse of the Year.

On July 24th Northerly injured a tendon in trackwork and was retired from racing. The injury has denied him a chance to win a 3rd Cox Plate and has robbed the Melbourne Spring Carnival of much interest.
